What do you want for your life?
/Imagine you and I are fully immersed in conversation, and you’re sharing where you’re at and what’s going on. You’re not entirely happy about a few things and I ask you what you want for your life.
Now, most people will go straight to sharing all the things they don't want, don't like, or can't have. Those things often flow out easily and you’ll perhaps feel sad or it might even be painful to talk about them.
I'd gently remind you that the question was "What do you want?" … and that usually stops people in their tracks.
Why it’s hard to say what we want for our life
There are many reasons why it can be hard to say what we want.
... years of conditioning to put others first.
... the weight of expectation and pressure to do what we think we ‘should’.
... worries about being laughed at or told we're silly.
Perhaps one of those reasons stands out for you or maybe there's something else. Take a moment now and think about it — why is it hard for you to say what you want? (if you've got your journal handy, write down what comes to mind).
If you look closely, you’ll probably see there’s some sort of fear. But it’s time to make a choice.
Will you let the fear stop you from living your life fully? Or will you take a breath, draw on your courage, and say what you want?
Declare what you want for your life
Remember to imagine we’re sitting together and you feel safe to say what's on your mind and in your heart. Breathe in that feeling and feel your courage grow.
Now thinking about your life, imagine it just how you want it to be and put yourself in the picture, be there fully now. What does your life look and feel like?
This is important inner work because until you declare what you want, you'll be pushed and pulled by whatever comes along. You'll settle for life as it is rather than committing to what it could be, and that’s not okay with you, is it?
Having the weight of expectations, shoulds, and regrets sitting heavily on your shoulders (and in your heart and stomach) isn’t a great feeling!
You’ve got a dream for how you want your life to be and it’s up to you whether you allow it the opportunity to be made real or not.
If you’ve read this far, then I’m going to be so bold as to say, you know you want to do this even if it feels a little (or a lot) scary.
Go ahead and give yourself permission to declare what you want, write it down.
Congratulations, you’ve just taken an all-important step to making the dream you have for your life real.
