Your thoughts create your experience of life
/I know it's summer here in NZ and naturally, that means it's likely to be hot. BUT it's been so much hotter than usual.
When I find myself teetering on the edge of complaining about the heat my dad's voice pops into mind. He's saying, "if you go on about the heat, you only make it worse."
Hmm. While that's annoyingly frustrating to hear. It's true. Thanks dad.
He got that piece of wisdom from his mum, my Gran. It's what she'd say to him and his siblings when they were complaining about not being able to sleep because of the heat. She probably didn't realise it then, but she was applying a powerful neuro-linguistic programming strategy. Go Gran!
Because whatever you give your attention too, grows. It's like giving oxygen to a fire - it burns bigger and brighter.
The more you think about the heat and talk about what you don't like, don't want or can't do, you actually make yourself hotter.
Now it's not about denying the truth of the matter. Yes. It. Is. Hot. But complaining about it or at least, giving it a whole heap of attention isn't going to change the situation.
A better approach would be to focus on how to feel more comfortable.
As I wrote this article, I snacked on cucumber (it’s incredibly hydrating and cooling). I've got a glass of water on my desk that I'm taking sips from regularly. And I'm working in shorter blocks of time, and in between those blocks, heading outside under the shade of a tree where there's a beautiful breeze.
And as for sleeping, a cool shower before going to bed, a glass of water beside my bed, and I'm consciously settling into a position that's comfortable (because the more you toss and turn, the hotter you get!).
If you think about it, it's not just in responding to the heat where you can apply these strategies. You can do the same as we head into February. As you think about the new month ahead, how do you want to be and what do you want to focus on?
Because by consciously choosing, by being intentional, you'll be directing you're attention, energy and focus to what serves you well. Rather than giving oxygen to what you don't like, don't want or can't do. You're giving it to what helps, to what matters to you.
So now, as you finish up reading this email, have a think about the month ahead. If you've got the 2019 Live Well Planner jump into the Reset for February pages. If you haven't got a copy of the Planner yet, grab a notebook and your journal.
I'd love to hear from you. What's your favourite tip for being more comfortable in this heat? Or perhaps, you'd like to share something you're going to focus on in February. Contact me here.
Go well,
