Glossing over the surface can seem like a good idea, but is it really?
/This summer there's been a bit of sanding and painting going on at my place. And the other day, it was time to sand some weatherboards around the porch.
Fair to say I wasn't entirely looking forward to it. The noise and dust plus the heat of the day meant it wasn't going to be overly pleasant. But the job needed doing so I tweaked my mindset and got stuck in!
As I sanded I started to think about life (perhaps not surprising for a life coach and someone fascinated by the concept of living intentionally!).
We could have chosen to paint over the top of what was on the weatherboards BUT the finish would have looked terrible. I could just imagine that each time I walked past or thought about that area of the house, I would have regretted not doing it well.
So, instead of painting over the top, we’re taking off some layers, smoothing the surface and filling any holes. And that's what got me thinking about life.
If we keep glossing across the surface, pretending everything's okay, we’re not going to feel satisfied with how we’re living. Because deep down we know something's not right or that life isn't as good as it could be.
And yes, going deep to do the inner work (or in this case, the sanding) can take time and it's going to be hard ... but I reckon it’s worth it when you see the result.
What do you think?
Is glossing over the surface when you know there are *things* to be sorted really making you happy? Is it helping you live the life you dream of?
